The Akron Cleveland Association of REALTORS® Annual Meeting recognized two remarkable organizations whose work exemplifies our commitment to expanding housing opportunity and strengthening communities across Northeast Ohio.

J. Howard Battle Equal Opportunity in Housing Award: NAHREP-Cleveland

Named after the first African American member of the Cleveland Area Board of REALTORS in 1964, the J. Howard Battle Award recognizes a person or organization for outstanding efforts promoting fair housing and diversity within ACAR’s three-county jurisdiction.

This year’s recipient, the Cleveland Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP-Cleveland), exemplifies this commitment as a newly established chapter recently launched after several years of planning and development. The organization champions homeownership for the Hispanic community in and around Cleveland, Ohio.

NAHREP-Cleveland advances fair housing and diversity through community outreach, educational programs, and business networking events, supported by its Board of Directors, members, and sponsors. By recognizing leaders who promote equitable housing and inclusive practices, NAHREP-Cleveland demonstrates how a new, engaged organization can make a meaningful impact in expanding opportunity and strengthening the local real estate community.

#HomeForAll Award: City of South Euclid

The #HomeForAll Award recognizes a public service official, an organization, or an ACAR member for their efforts to make Northeast Ohio a #homeforall with an emphasis on the protection of property rights, commercial development, and resources to support homeownership.

This year, that honor goes to the City of South Euclid. The city has modernized its zoning code to expand property rights and promote new housing opportunities. Updates include:

  • A Single-Family Infill Overlay District that eases lot size and setback requirements, making it easier for residents and builders to develop on existing parcels
  • The creation of a new Mixed-Use Transit-Oriented Development district to attract higher-density housing and commercial projects along key corridors

These reforms reduce the need for variances, encourage walkable mixed-use investment, and strengthen the city’s tax base. Paired with programs like property tax abatements and housing incentives, South Euclid is actively supporting homeownership and revitalization in its neighborhoods.

Mayor Georgine Welo accepted the award on behalf of the city.

Congratulations to our J. Howard Battle and #HomeForAll Award winners!
