Commercial real estate momentum is improving across Northeast Ohio—but Cleveland and Akron are getting there in different ways.
The latest National Association of REALTORS® Commercial Real Estate Demand Index shows both metros posting year-over-year gains in Q2 2026. Cleveland’s index reached 102.0, up 8.4 points from a year ago. Akron reached 95.3, up 5.4 points.
That puts Cleveland above the national benchmark of 100, while Akron continues its recovery from a low of 88.3 in late 2025.
But the numbers tell an even more interesting story when you look at what’s driving each market.
Cleveland’s strongest driver is retail.
Akron’s strongest driver is industrial activity.
That distinction matters. Northeast Ohio isn’t one commercial real estate market, and the opportunities aren’t identical from one metro to the other.
In the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at what is driving each market—and what the latest numbers could mean for commercial REALTORS®, developers, investors and communities.
Cleveland is gaining momentum. Akron is recovering. The next question is: what’s driving it?
